America now executes someone every 9 days

On Friday, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was sentenced to death for his role in the Boston Marathon Bombing.

According to NBC correspondent Pete Williams, it is likely to take at least a decade for Tsarnaev’s appeals to be processed.

But assuming those appeals fail, Tsarnaev will join the long list of death row inmates executed in the U.S.

In 2015 so far, 14 people have been executed, or one every 9.6 days, a slightly faster rate than 2014’s one execution every 10.4 days.

Of 2015’s executions, six were white, five were black, and at least three were deemed to have an intellectual disability.

And the average time from sentencing to execution was 18 years.

There are currently more than 3,000 inmates on death row in the U.S.
