Americans like Planned Parenthood more than they like pretty much everything else

One thing that Republican members of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform repeated over and over again during Tuesday’s Planned Parenthood hearing was that the effort to defund the family planning provider represented the interests of the American people.

Except it really doesn’t. A poll released this week by NBC News and the Wall Street Journal revealed that Americans actually like Planned Parenthood more than they like pretty much any major person or thing in politics right now.

According to the survey, Planned Parenthood is more popular with Americans than every presidential candidate and both political parties. (The organization is nearly twice as popular as Donald Trump, the candidate currently leading in the GOP field.)

Despite Republican threats to shut down the government if Planned Parenthood kept its funding, Congress reached a temporary agreement this week to keep things running—which means cutting paychecks to federal employees, keeping Head Start open, replenishing grants to domestic violence providers, and other essential services—until December, at which point we will all be experiencing some nasty déjà vu. It’s going to be a long three months.
