And Now, a Depressing Story Featuring Megyn Kelly, Seth Rogen, Paul Ryan, and Civility

Over the past couple of days, the conversation dominating our politics—even more than the cruel detainment of immigrant children—has revolved around what is or isn’t a civil way to deal with the entirely uncivil and violently bigoted members of the Trump administration.

Naturally, Megyn Kelly, a woman whose entire career is predicated on the demonization of black people in America, has stepped in as the voice of civility. Today on the show America loves to not watch, Megyn Kelly Today, Kelly addressed two particular and very serious lightning rods in the “civility” conversation: the Red Hen Restaurant asking Sarah Huckabee Sanders to leave its premises and famous actor Seth Rogen’s refusal to take a picture with famous asshole Paul Ryan. Hang on to your butts.

Joined by a panel that included Former Assistant U.S. Attorney Daniel Goldman, NBC’s Stephanie Gosk, and inexplicably, Karamo Brown, one of the five Queer Eyes, Kelly opened the segment by bragging about how she doesn’t hit her kids (ok…) and then criticizing Rep. Maxine Waters’ call for people to continue to protest and publicly shame members of the Trump administration. She even went so far as to assign violence to Waters’ statement, because again, ascribing violence to black people is what she does best. Via Raw Story:

“You don’t call for incivility or arguably violence because that’s how it sounded to me to in response to your own anger about what’s happening at the southern border,” Kelly opined. “That’s not the way forward.”

When Gosk explained that Waters’ statement was a call to protest the indefensible actions of the Trump administration, Kelly reiterated that such protest was “uncivil” and that people should instead march to protest, even though she doesn’t particularly like when they do that either.

THEN, as another example of the incivility that is allegedly disintegrating the nation as we speak, Kelly brought up an anecdote that Seth Rogen, of all people, told Stephen Colbert. She was incensed that Rogen refused to be photographed with Ryan and then had the nerve to criticize him in front of his children. “Paul Ryan hasn’t done anything!” she complained.

Paul Ryan hasn’t done anything. Hmm. Passing that tax bill that will only intensify the egregious inequality in our country was a thing he did. Finding an excuse to allow the continued separation of immigrant children from their parents instead of fighting to end it is also a thing he did. Anyway, Kelly went on to insist that people not take their frustrations with the president out on the people who enable him and promote his white nationalist vision of America!

“You can loathe President Trump, you can loathe his policies, you can completely have zero respect for those who support him and put his agenda into operation,” she stated. “But you have to be respectful of the people who put him in office or you’re going to get four more years just like these.”

And when reminded that Donald Trump employs completely uncivil personal attacks every day on Twitter and at his campaign rallies and at every other moment ever, Kelly left us with this priceless wisdom.

“Why can’t you choose enlightenment and love and light and go towards that?”

Why can’t you choose enlightenment and love and light and go towards that? Why can’t you choose enlightenment and love and light and go towards that? Why can’t you choose enlightenment and love and light and go towards that? Why can’t you choose enlightenment and love and light and go towards that? Why can’t you choose enlightenment and love and light and go towards that? Why can’t you choose enlightenment and love and light and go towards that?

There is literally no better cop-out in a conversation about civility than talking about going towards love and light, which are beautiful concepts and absolutely useless and empty talking points when people are being targeted, rounded up, separated from their families, and abused. Namaste.
