Cuomore Years of Hell

With less than 30 percent of polling precincts counted, the Associated Press declared incumbent Andrew Cuomo the winner in New York’s contentious Democratic gubernatorial primary, ending what had become a study in stark contrasts between Cuomo’s craven political opportunism and Cynthia Nixon’s progressive vision for the future, which included abolishing ICE and fixing New York City’s degrading subway system.

There had been months of acrimony between the two candidates, punctuated in its final days with an ad allegedly approved by Cuomo’s camp accusing Nixon of abetting anti-Semitism and mailed to voters on the first night of Rosh Hashanah. Nixon is, in fact, raising her children Jewish.

Throughout the campaign, Nixon’s unapologetically progressive stances regularly rattled Cuomo, forcing him to move left on a number of issues.

Cuomo advances to the November general election, where he will face Republican Marc Molinaro, the Dutchess County executive. So far, polling has indicated that Cuomo has a double-digit lead over Molinaro.

The winner of the November general election will be tasked with the unenviable job of governing a state beset with bizarre political infighting, crumbling infrastructure, and rampant corruption. Have fun!
