Brett Kavanaugh's Yale Classmate Says He Was a Belligerent Drunk Who Lied Under Oath

Brett Kavanaugh loves beer. During a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing last Thursday, the Trump Administration’s pick for Supreme Court mentioned beer dozens of times, but passed off his drinking as a young person having fun. He also specifically claimed that he had never blacked out from drinking — but unfortunately for Kavanaugh, classmates of his at Yale beg to differ.

The classmate, Chad Ludington, who said he frequently socialized with Judge Kavanaugh as a student, said in a statement that the judge had been untruthful in testimony to the Senate Judiciary Committee when he had denied any possibility that he had ever blacked out from drinking.

Mr. Ludington said that Judge Kavanaugh had played down “the degree and frequency” of his drinking, and that the judge had often become “belligerent and aggressive” while intoxicated. Other former classmates have made similar claims.

“It is truth that is at stake, and I believe that the ability to speak the truth, even when it does not reflect well upon oneself, is a paramount quality we seek in our nation’s most powerful judges,” Mr. Ludington said, adding that he planned to “take my information to the F.B.I.”

The FBI is currently engaged in a week-long extension of Kavanaugh’s original background check, ostensibly to investigate the claims by Dr. Christine Blasey Ford and several other women that Kavanaugh sexually assaulted them in his youth. Several of Kavanaugh’s accusers mention that alcohol played a large factor in their assault, and Kavanaugh’s drinking habits were a frequent topic during his testimony. As the Times notes later in the piece, it’s illegal to lie to Congress, but it remains to be seen what part Ludington’s word will play in the investigation. NBC News reported on Saturday that the Trump Administration was still placing limits on who the FBI could talk to in its investigation, something that Trump directly denied on Twitter shortly after the first story ran.

Per NBC, Kavanaugh’s Yale classmates might not even be consulted:

According to the sources, the president’s Saturday night tweet saying he wants the FBI to interview whoever agents deem appropriate has not changed the limits imposed by the White House counsel’s office on the FBI investigation — including a specific witness list that does not include Julie Swetnick, who has accused Kavanaugh of sexual misconduct in high school.

Also not on the list, the sources say, are former classmates who have contradicted Kavanaugh’s account of his college alcohol consumption, instead describing him as a frequent, heavy drinker. The FBI is also not authorized to interview high school classmates who could shed light on what some people have called untruths in Kavanaugh’s Senate Judiciary Committee testimony about alleged sexual references in his high school yearbook.

According to the Times, the FBI hasn’t even contacted Ford yet, despite Ford’s legal team making “repeated efforts to speak with them.” The FBI has said the investigation is specifically aimed at evaluating the claims of Ford and Deborah Ramirez, who says Kavanaugh thrust his penis in her face at Yale, but thus far, it’s unclear how the agency plans to do that.
