British Diver Tom Daley Says He's Dating a Man
U.K. Olympic diver Tom Daley posted a confessional video to YouTube on Monday to “put an end to all the rumours and speculation” and reveal that he has been dating a man for the past five months.
In the video entitled “Something I Want to Say,” Daley said that he felt the need to record and post the video because he was misquoted by The Daily Mirror.
“In an ideal world I wouldn’t be doing this video, because it shouldn’t matter,” Daley said toward the beginning of the video. “But recently I was misquoted in an interview and it made me feel really angry and frustrated – emotions that I’ve never felt before when reading something about myself.”
Daley said:
“Now I kind of feel ready to talk about my relationships, and come spring this year my life changed, massively, when I met someone and they make me feel so happy, so safe, and everything just feels great. And, well that someone, is a guy. And it did take me by surprise a little bit. It was always in the back of my head that something like that could happen. But something this spring, just clicked.”
He shared the video this morning on Twitter:
Daley isn’t the first male Olympic diver to publicly open up about his sexuality. Divers Matthew Mitcham from Australia and Greg Louganis from the U.S. have both come out as gay.
Daley notes in the video that “I still fancy girls,” adding, “but right now I’m dating a guy and I couldn’t be happier.”
