Calle 13 And Julian Assange Just Had A Music Baby

In what is potentially the most top-billed revolutionary collaboration of our time, Puerto Rico’s Calle 13 has teamed up with WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine, and Audioslave fame and Palestinian artist, Kamilya Jubran.

The resulting song, titled ‘Multi_Viral,’ was released online today by Calle 13. It represents a pan-revolutionary musical force, whether you love or hate the message.

In it, the lyrics of Calle 13’s lead singer Residente, confronts controversy head-on with signature intensity, which is only encouraged by Morello’s madman riffs.

Assange appears, stating that “we live in the world that your propaganda made. Where you think you are strong you are weak…Your secrecy shows us where we will strike. Your weapons reveal your fears for all to see.”

Last June, Residente paid a visit to Assange at the Ecuadorian Embassy in London, where he is holed up, avoiding extradition to Sweden for questioning on sexual-assault charges.

But the song was partly crowdsourced by Assange and Residente following an August 13 session on Twitter that brought thousands of responses from around the world in English and Spanish.

But does the proposed revolution even make any damn sense?

First, you have Morello, who has vocally supported governments like Communist Cuba, a regime that has mastered surveillance and censorship, and that keeps the citizenry blinded by propaganda.

And on the other hand, you have Assange, the man who has released countless government cables, and who is potentially the biggest-profiled advocate for freedom of the press, censorship, and investigative journalism of our time.

Calle 13 is more of a mixed bag, whose politics have drawn criticism from across the political spectrum.

But, hey. Nobody said the revolution would be pretty.
