Colin Kaepernick's jersey is now the best-selling piece of NFL merchandise

Colin Kaepernick’s refusal to stand during performances of the National Anthem has made him one of the most polarizing figures currently playing in the NFL.

“I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color,” Kaepernick explained to the NFL after a recent game. “To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.”

While some have argued that his protest of the Anthem has been unpatriotic behavior unworthy of a prominent sports star, it would seem as if the 28-year-old quarterback’s fans are more than OK with the way he’s decided to use his platform. According to the NFL’s official merchandise page, Kaepernick’s red San Francisco 49ers jersey is now the top-selling jersey in their online store.

As NBC points out, as of just about a month ago, Kaepernick’s jersey was far from being the best-seller that it currently is. The jersey’s sudden spike in popularity is likely to have been triggered by Kaepernick’s decision to speak out about systemic racism and police brutality against people of color.
