Donald Trump and his taco bowl are a perfect Cinco de Mayo combo

There’s something picture perfect about Donald Trump eating fake Mexican food to celebrate a fake Mexican holiday and proclaiming, with his fake tan and fake admiration for Mexico, that he loves Spanish-speaking people.

The presumptive Republican presidential candidate took a brief break from spewing xenophobic remarks about Mexicans on Thursday to join other confused Americans in celebrating a holiday that’s loosely inspired by Mexican history with food that’s loosely inspired by Mexican cuisine.

“The best taco bowls are made in the Trump Tower Grill. I love Hispanics!” Trump said, instantly endearing himself to all Mexicans and Spanish-speakers everywhere.

Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican-American holiday with old roots dating back to Mexico’s short-lived military victory over invading French forces in 1862. But the party really got started about 100 years later, when Chicano students were looking for an excuse to celebrate the end of college finals, and made Cinco de Mayo their thing.

Sometime in the 1980s or ‘90s it began getting marketed aggressively by beer companies, and now suddenly it’s an unofficial nationwide holiday where nobody knows how to act or what they’re celebrating.

But at its core, Cinco de Mayo is a day about pretending to celebrate Mexico through cultural appropriation and inappropriate gestures.

And who better to do that than reality TV actor Donald Trump, as he pretends to look presidential while pretending to enjoy an untouched meal on top of his unread newspapers?
