Donald Trump is the projected winner of the the New York Republican primary

Donald Trump just won the contest for the Republican presidential nomination in New York State, according to the AP, which called the race for Trump at 9 p.m.

“We don’t have much of a race anymore” The GOP frontrunner told a raucous crowd in midtown Manhattan. He also told his supporters that Ted Cruz, his nearest Republican opponent, was “mathematically eliminated” after tonight’s results.

A runaway Trump victory was not unexpected. Prior to the primary, polls showed Trump to be the clear favorite. (Real Clear Politics showed Trump with a 30 point lead against his nearest competitor in the national polling average.) And Trump, a native New Yorker, fully expected to win over his hometown Republicans.

As the primary winner, Trump will take the vast majority of New York’s 95 convention delegates. Fourteen of the state’s convention delegates will be awarded based on statewide results. If Trump wins the statewide results with more than 50% of the overall vote, as he is likely to do, he will be awarded all 14 of those delegates. The rest of New York’s delegates are awarded based on the results in individual Congressional districts. If Trump manages to get more than 50% of the vote in every one of New York’s congressional districts, he will walk away with all 95 New York’s convention delegates.

Trump went into New York’s primary with 756 delegates. He needs 1,237 delegates to win the nomination. If Trump falls short of 1,237 delegates, the Republican Party will likely have a contested convention, in which case anything could happen.
