Donald Trump on mass shootings: ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Donald Trump has an answer to the epidemic of mass shootings currently plaguing America: there is no answer.

In the wake of the most recent massacre in Oregon, a familiar chorus has erupted pointing out that the United States is far and away alone in the industrialized world in the scale of its problems with gun violence.

Trump, though, took an existential view in an interview with ABC’s George Stephanopoulos which aired Sunday. He said that, while shootings like the one in Oregon are tragic, there’s not much to be done about them.

“No matter how you cut it, you have people that are mentally ill and they have problems and they’re going to slip through the cracks. And no matter how you do it, no matter how you try, and if you go back 2,000 years and if you go forward 2 million years, you’re going to have problems,” he said.

When Stephanopoulos described this sentiment as “passive,” Trump said that he wanted to be vigilant, but that “no matter what you do, you will have problems and that’s the way the world goes.”
