Donald Trump says Caitlyn Jenner can use whatever bathroom she wants in Trump Tower
GOP frontrunner Donald Trump said he would allow transgender icon Caitlyn Jenner to use whatever bathroom she wants in his buildings. Yes, that Donald Trump.
In an interview with NBC’s “Today Show,” Trump was asked by host Matt Lauer about his position on a so-called “bathroom bill” recently passed in North Carolina, which prevents transgender people from using the bathroom of their identified gender. Lauer pressed Trump by asking, “If Caitlyn Jenner were to walk into Trump Tower and wanted to use the bathroom, you would be fine with her using any bathroom she chooses?”
Trump replied by saying, “that is correct.” He also went on to critique proposals for separate transgender bathrooms, calling them “discriminatory” and “unbelievably expensive for businesses.”
Last summer, Trump mentioned in an interview that he had met Caitlyn Jenner before her transition. Misgendering the reality TV star and referring to her by her deadname, Trump told the Hollywood Reporter that, “I knew him a little bit when Bruce was a great athlete. He was one of the best-looking people you’ll ever see.”
In 2012, Donald Trump caused some controversy when his “Miss Universe Canada” beauty pageant disqualified a contender after discovering she was transgender. Though the pageant eventually reversed their decision, Trump couldn’t resist making a highly offensive joke about the situation in an interview with Barbara Walters.
Trump did not tell NBC whether or not he thought he thought all businesses should be prohibited from that kind of transgender discrimination. However, the candidate did offer some thoughts on North Carolina’s controversial anti-LGBTQ law saying, “North Carolina did something (that) was very strong and they’re paying a big price.” He went on to say that the law had resulted in “a lot of problems.”
