Don't worry, everyone: Gwyneth Paltrow thinks America's having an 'exciting' time!
Over the weekend, Gwyneth Paltrow, Goop founder and patron saint of white, oil pulling feminism, attended Airbnb Open, a three day conference in Los Angeles that brought together Airbnb hosts and celebrities to discuss travel, business, and how to be a good Airbnb host. In an interview with Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky, Paltrow shared her thoughts on the election, which were a bit more enthusiastic and optimistic than what you might expect, considering she once hosted a Democratic fundraiser in 2012.
“It’s such an exciting time to be an American because we are at this amazing inflection point,” she said, cheerfully overlooking the celebrations of neo-Nazis and the general fear most marginalized people feel. Or maybe someone just cut her off before she waxed poetic about socialism, the death of neoliberalism, and the need to engage the working class.
Paltrow added, “People are clearly tired of the status quo, and … it’s sort of like someone threw it all in the air and we’re going to see how it all lands. It’s very important for me, personally, now more than ever, to create a community and to remember the humanity of everybody and to create love and … understanding.”
The idea that Gwyneth is just going to “see how it lands” speaks to the fair amount of privilege she has, operating outside the sphere of those who are most vulnerable to the Trump presidency, but honestly her decision to include an $80,000-per-person National Geographic private jet expedition around the world in the Goop Gift Guide already said enough.
Paltrow continued, “The most amazing thing for me about this election is I felt … ‘I don’t understand the opposition well enough at all.’ I’m not going to tell you what side I’m on, but my big takeaway was, ‘I really need to open my mind and understand better because I don’t.’”
An indifferent electorate does not a good Airbnb host make. Thanks Gwyn!
