Dutch Teen Arrested For Making Terroristic Threats to American Airlines on Twitter

Latest

A 14-year-old girl has been arrested by Rotterdam police after she tweeting a threat to American Airlines on Sunday.

The girl in question, who went by @QueenDemetriax_ on the social media platform (that account has since been suspended), sent the following tweet to the airline: “hello my name’s Ibrahim and I’m from Afghanistan. I’m part of Al Qaida and on June 1st I’m gonna do something really big bye.”

American Airlines immediately responded to the tweet, notifying the teen that they had reached out to the police.

The girl in question—Sarah, according to Twitter—immediately backtracked her comments, alleging that she was joking.

But it was too little too late. The authorities were notified and on Monday, Dutch news station RTL Nieuws reported that the 14-year-old girl had turned herself in to the Rotterdam Police Department. That news was also confirmed by the authorities on—yep, you guessed it—Twitter.

And if you think that this unfortunate and stupid incident will serve as a cautionary tale of what not to do on Twitter, you’d be wrong. Earlier this morning, a copycat user made the same threats to Southwest Airlines and Delta. Southwest has since responded and notified the user that they have contacted the authorities.
