Even Steve Bannon's Main Financial Backer Is Over Him

Disavowing Steve Bannon seems to be the hot trend this winter. First, a lawyer for Donald Trump threatened to sue Bannon over his alleged criticisms of Trump administration members in a new book; now, conservative billionaire Rebekah Mercer — Bannon’s primary donor — is speaking out against the former White House strategist.

“I support President Trump and the platform upon which he was elected,” Mercer told the Washington Post on Thursday, adding, “My family and I have not communicated with Steve Bannon in many months and have provided no financial support to his political agenda, nor do we support his recent actions and statements.”

Rebekah Mercer, the daughter of hedge fund tycoon Robert Mercer, broke her customary media silence to publicly distance herself and her family from Bannon. “I have a minority interest in Breitbart News and I remain committed in my support for them,” Mercer noted to the Post, which the New York Times suggests may constitute an “implicit threat” against Bannon, who still serves as chairman of Breitbart News (for now.)

Mercer issuing the political version of “I don’t know her” may indeed signal the beginning of the end for once-powerful racist Steve Bannon, who enjoyed a seven-month tenure in Trump’s White House before being fired in August. (To be fair, that’s practically an eternity compared to hapless colleagues like Anthony Scaramucci, who lasted 10 days as communications director before retreating into the night.)

Hey, if Bannon is truly on his way out of the political sphere, at least he can console himself with all those fond memories of embodying white nationalism and campaigning for a pedophile. It was the worst of times, it was the worst of times.
