George Papadopoulos Will Stick With Plea Deal

George Papadopoulos, former Trump campaign foreign policy advisor and one of the clown car of criminals that emerged from the president’s inner circle, will stick with the plea deal he accepted from special counsel Robert Mueller. That deal included helping Mueller with the investigation.

Papadopoulos’ wife, Simona Mangiante Papadopoulos, has made the rounds to cable news over the last few weeks, expressing her concern about her husband’s fate and implying he may scrap the deal. According to Mangiante Papadopoulos, her and her husband spent the last few weeks deciding whether to fight the government on the charges.

“I trusted the institutions until they proved me wrong,” Mangiante Papadopoulos told MSNBC earlier this month, according to The Hill. She said she’d become aware of “exculpatory evidences that fully justify him to drop off his plea agreement.”

“George will take responsibility for some inaccuracies during the interview with the FBI,” Mangiante Papadopoulos told ABC News today.

Mangiante Papadopoulos said that though her husband won’t fight the government, she still hopes “the judge will take into account” her belief that he was somehow set up “in order to assess George’s role in this investigation from an objective point of view and, yes, definitely decide for zero jail time.”

With this plea deal, Papadopoulos admits that he lied to the FBI about his contacts, including one who had “substantial connections to Russian government officials,” according to prosecutors.

Mangiante Papadopoulos may not get her wish for no jail time. Earlier this month, prosecutors recommended a six month jail sentence for Papadopoulos. “The nature and circumstances of the offense warrant a sentence of incarceration,” they wrote. He will be sentenced on September 7th.
