Google is offering free medical diagnoses via video chat

Wondering whether that redness in your eye is pink eye? If you Google it, not only will the tech giant give you the symptoms for Conjunctivitis, but it might let you video chat with an actual doctor for confirmation.

On Friday, Reddit user /u/jasonahoule posted a screenshot to the subreddit /r/Google highlighting the new feature.

“Had no idea Google started doing this,” the redditor wrote.

In addition to giving a brief overview for what might be the cause of knee pain, the Google query also gave the option to connect with a health care professional. Even better, Google will pick up the tab.

Google confirmed via email that the program does exist.

“When you’re searching for basic health information—from conditions like insomnia or food poisoning—our goal is to provide you with the most helpful information available,” a Google spokesperson told Fusion. “We’re trying this new feature to see if it’s useful to people.”

The doctor via video chat appears to be part of Google’s Helpouts, a service introduced in 2013 that allows people to pay to get expert advice from a slew of topics ranging from cooking to photography to parenting.

Google would not confirm how long this specific diagnostic service would last or whether they will start charging for the service. It’s also unclear whether everyone has access to a doctor-on-demand, or if it’s only a select few who are part of the pilot program. Our suggestion: Google it.
