Hell is Watching Chuck, Nancy, and Trump Arguing in the Oval Office
Not even Dante could have fathomed a depth of hell worse than watching President Donald Trump, House Minority Leader (and likely next House Speaker) Nancy Pelosi, and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer arguing in the Oval Office about government spending and “border security,” aka Trump’s long-promised border wall.
Because we live in a fallen world full of sin and vice, however, that very argument unfolded over an agonizing 20 or so minutes on Tuesday, with Trump insisting over and over again that he would happily shut down the entire federal government if Congress didn’t give him billions of dollars for the wall he has continually promised that Mexico would pay for.
Repeatedly insisting that major portions of his imaginary wall had already been built (this is not true—the Washington Post even had to invent a dumb new way of saying it’s not true) Trump spent much of the sit-down robbing the GOP of any hope of blaming a government shut down on the Democrats.
“I will be the one to shut it down,” Trump declared, over and over again, in no uncertain terms, adding, “I’m not going to blame you for it.”
While Trump bloviated about his wall and border security, Pelosi and Schumer largely sat and let him run his mouth, occasionally interjecting with points that the president either ignored, or denied altogether.
Vice President Mike Pence, meanwhile, spent the whole meeting just staring blankly into space—probably thinking about the Bible, or a nice glass of milk, or something.
