Here's what other countries want to know about Donald Trump
As Donald Trump’s polling numbers continue to rise—or, in the case of Hispanic voters, to plummet into oblivion—Americans aren’t the only ones who have questions about him.
We wanted to find out what people around the world were asking about Trump, so we turned to Google. Google’s News Lab provided Fusion with the most searched for questions and related search queries for 11 countries: Israel, Scotland, Kenya, Mexico, Russia, India, Brazil, Argentina, Germany, South Africa, and Italy.
The results show that that searchers in other countries have similar concerns and curiosities: about Trump’s candidacy, about his net worth, and, of course, about his hair.
A number of countries simply want a very basic question answered. “Who is Donald Trump?” was in the top 5 searches about The Donald in India, Brazil, Mexico, and Scotland. In Brazil and Scotland it was the #1 Trump-related question people searched for.
In India, meanwhile, the #1 search asks how old Donald Trump is. (He’s 69). Coming in at #3, Indians have also been wondering: “Why do people hate Donald Trump?”
Meanwhile, in Kenya, there’s a lot of concern about Trump’s presidential aspirations. The #3 Trump question there is “Will Trump be the next US President?” The top search in Kenya is “How much faith do people have in Donald Trump becoming President?” Sandwiched between those two: “How many wives has Donald Trump had?”
Kenya is very concerned.
Germany and Brazil are on Team Megyn Kelly, or at least they might be. In both countries “What did Donald Trump say about Megyn Kelly?” break the top-five.
Another topic of serious interest is Trump’s cash. The top related search for Trump in Kenya is “Donald Trump net worth.” In Scotland people are asking “How did Donald Trump make his money?” while South Africans are searching the same, but in the present tense.
What could that tense difference mean? Probably nothing. Trump owns a golf course in Scotland but not in South Africa, for what it’s worth. (Also nothing.)
In Italy, perhaps afraid of what they’d discover, people have been searching for “Donald Trump heritage.” (He’s German on his dad’s side, Scottish on his mom’s, for the record). Less afraid, Italians have been searching for Trump Towers in Chicago and New York. Likewise, Argentinians have been trying to find “Hotel Trump Miami,” though not as eagerly as that country’s #1 Trump-related search: Antonio Banderas on Trump.
Of course, Trump’s hair also gets some love. Italian’s want to know “What would Trump look like if he cut his hair?” Some South Africans want to know some much more profound about Trump’s pileous powers, asking “How does Donald Trump’s hair work?”
But Russia has perhaps the most interesting search of all. Nestled among a list of related searches that are pretty mundane (“Donald Trump,” “Ivanka Trump,” “Trump Towers”) is the search term “Donald Trump Condition.”
What does this mean? Is the Russian internet searching for a medical condition named for Donald Trump? Maybe, though it’s also possible they’re concerned about the condition of his body and/or some sort of soul. Could someone even be searching for a way to condition Donald Trump (or his hair) to their will? Are they just dropping in?
“Donald Trump condition” may well be the greatest mystery about Donald Trump of our time—except, of course, for all the other ones.
