Hillary Clinton Says She’s Done Running for Office

Get ready, Jared Huffman, there’s another news cycle about Hillary Clinton today.

Appearing on CBS Sunday Morning ahead of the Tuesday release of her new book, What Happened (Hint: she lost), Clinton vowed never again to run for office—although she didn’t swear off politics entirely.

“As an active politician, it’s over. I am done with being a candidate,” Clinton told anchor Jane Pauley, who had dramatically asked, “Is your Political. Career. Over?!”

Clinton said her loss to Donald Trump last November, which has profoundly shifted the course of the United States in a horrible direction, is still “very painful.” She acknowledged that on the night of the election, she hadn’t prepared a concession speech because practically no one in the country thought she was going to lose.

Clinton also admitted that she had struggled with the decision about whether to attend Trump’s inauguration:

But I’m a former first lady, and former presidents and first ladies show up. It’s part of the demonstration of the continuity of our government. And so there I was, on the platform, you know, feeling like an out-of-body experience. And then his speech, which was a cry from the white nationalist gut.

She also said that one of the biggest mistakes she made was using a private email server while serving as secretary of state, although her book includes a lengthy section defending that decision, according to Bloomberg, which was provided an advance copy.

Clinton’s forthcoming book tour, which kicks of Sept. 18 in Washington, D.C., and her public appearances to promote What Happened, haven’t been, shall we say, well–received by everyone, including some in her own party. Responding to Clinton’s continued attacks on former opponent Sen. Bernie Sanders, Rep. Jared Huffman tweeted this week, “Please Hillary, don’t go there.”
