Homicides Are on the Rise in Post-Hurricane Puerto Rico

In the months following Hurricane Maria, Puerto Rico has seen a massive surge in violent crime. In the first 11 days of this year, 32 people have been killed–double the number killed over the same period in 2017.

Part of the reason for this is that more than 40% of residents still don’t have power. Local authorities say that the as the power outage continues, crime will also continue to rise.
