House Democrats Pushing for Impeachment Bill After Trump's Weekend Tweets

President Trump did what he does best over the weekend: Tweeted a bunch of bullshit that was both violent and supremely gauche (following another rant in which he described MSNBC’s Mika Brzenkinski as “low I.Q.” and “crazy”). Republicans and Democrats were appalled at Trump’s WWE smackdown of CNN. Though I can’t imagine why anyone would be shocked: Trump’s most recent tirade is really par for the course.

Some Democratic lawmakers, however, were incensed enough to join their colleagues in sponsoring a bill to invoke the 25th Amendment and push for the president’s impeachment.

In April, Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) introduced legislation to create a congressional committee that could find Trump mentally unfit to serve as president. At the time of the bill’s introduction, 20 members of Congress signed on to support the bill, according to NBC News. That number swelled over the weekend: now 25 House Representatives have joined Raskin’s effort.

The bill would create an 11-person bipartisan committee to review Trump’s capacity to serve. Under the 25th Amendment, a vice president can remove a president if he or she is deemed unable to “discharge the powers and duties of the office” with the Congress’s support.

A committee would determine if Trump “is temporarily or permanently impaired by physical illness or disability, mental illness, mental deficiency, or alcohol or drug use to the extent that the person lacks sufficient understanding or capacity to execute the powers and duties of the office of President.”

Raskin employed a uniquely relevant metaphor in an interview with Yahoo News to describe the legislation:“In case of emergency, break glass. If you look at the record of things that have happened since January, it is truly a bizarre litany of events and outbursts.”

Speaking with CNN on Friday, Raskin reiterated the necessity for bipartisan support of his bill. “We’ve got to make sure that we have a president who is able faithfully to discharge the duties of the office. This is not just for one president, it’s for all of the presidents,” Raskin told CNN. “And I think we can come together in a bipartisan way.”
