The small Puerto Rican village of Mariana was especially hard hit by Hurricane Maria. For weeks, there was no sign of government help. The townspeople, desperate for any aid, painted a giant SOS sign in the street in hopes that someone would come to their rescue.

Now, months after the storm, the Mariana community has found a way to band together and take its recovery into its own hands.
