I Have Good News and Bad News About the Billboard Hot 100

It’s the end of an era. After a record-tying 16 weeks at the top of the charts, “Despacito” has officially been dethroned, losing its No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 to Taylor Swift’s latest karma-ignorant single, “Look What You Made Me Do.” Summer’s really over, y’all, but so is the drought of female singers at the top of the charts.

With “LWYMMD,” Swift became the first woman of 2017 to reach the very top of the charts. She’s the first woman in over a year to have a No. 1 song (not including Halsey, who was featured on the Chainsmokers’ “Closer”). And while the song is annoying as all hell, its meticulously planned and fan-fueled movement on the charts is really impressive. Still, this means that “Despacito”—a vivid symbol of our multiracial and multicultural society, and a tribute to the power of Latinx music—has officially lost out on its record-breaking moment. So count me as having mixed feelings about the whole thing.

“LWYMMD” debuted at 77 on the Billboard Hot 100, but after racking up 84.4 million streams in its first week, Swift made the fifth biggest jump to the No. 1 spot ever. “LWYMMD” didn’t just became the most streamed song for a week of 2017, but also the most streamed female-fronted song ever, (Adele previously held the title with 61.6 million streams for “Hello” in 2015.) “LWYMMD” also earned the highest sales this year with 353,000 downloads.

And to think we’re only at the very beginning of total Swift cultural domination, that is a long lead album release cycle allowing her to participate in two Grammys seasons among other things, and not allowing the rest of us to hear the end of it.
