Jimmy Fallon had a wildly friendly interview with Donald Trump last night, and people are pissed

Donald Trump appeared on two talk shows yesterday. One of them is hosted by someone whose credibility has been questioned by others in his profession. The other is hosted by Dr. Oz.

Softball was the game during Trump’s appearance on The Tonight Show as host Jimmy Fallon complimented Trump on the tenor of his voice, played with the candidate’s hair and lobbed him a few unchallenging political questions, like one about Vladimir Putin (“I know nothing about him, really”).

As you can imagine, the internet was unimpressed.

Most of the criticism centered on Fallon’s willingness to create such a friendly environment for a man who courts white supremacists and wants to build a wall along the border of the U.S. and Mexico. Simply asking him about his propensity to say shocking things (“I’m trying not to, anymore”) doesn’t really cut it.

TRUMP: We’re gonna deport everyone

FALLON: (cracking up)

TRUMP: Anyone against me will pay

FALLON: (bursts out laughing) Ya got me!

Fallon’s performative messing-up of Trump’s hair drew particularly big eyerolls. Goofs about Trump’s hair are great if you happen to live in 2012. In 2016, he’s the GOP nominee and there are greater things at stake.

People probably shouldn’t have expected too much though. This is Jimmy “Lip Sync Challenge” Fallon we’re talking about here. He doesn’t exactly have a track record of hard-hitting political interviews
