Khizr Khan just threw down another challenge for Donald Trump
Khizr Khan, the Gold Star parent of a fallen solider who spoke out against Donald Trump’s Islamophobic rhetoric a the Democratic National Convention, challenged Trump on Monday to take a U.S. naturalization test.
His comments came after Trump proposed adding an “ideological test” for immigrants, including questions about gender equality and gay rights. The naturalization test currently includes questions on topics like U.S. history, government, and geography.
“I challenge Trump to take the naturalization test with me any day. His is demagoguery and pandering for vote. A divider like Trump can never be the steward of this country,” Khan told the Huffington Post in an email.
The Khans immigrated to the U.S. from Pakistan in 1980. Their son, Captain Humayun Khan, was killed in combat during a tour of duty in Iraq in 2004.
“This is my country too. We must make it safe―as Muslim Americans it is our obligation to keep our country safe. We reject all violence,” he wrote. “We support better immigration policies. We stand as a testament to assimilation and being part of patriotic America as anyone else.”
Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid echoed Khan’s words yesterday, calling Trump “a spoiled, unpatriotic drain on society” and adding that “Immigrants pledge to defend America against all enemies foreign and domestic, while Trump insults Gold Star parents like Ghdara and Khazir Kha, and war heroes like my friend Senator John McCain.”
Trump has so far not responded to the comments from Khan.
