Michelle Obama and Oprah had a deeply sobering chat about what Trump's America feels like

Michelle Obama, America’s favorite White House resident—sorry, Barack—sat down with that other universal fave, Oprah Winfrey, to talk about her eight years as First Lady.

The full interview airs Dec. 19 on CBS, but the network released a short clip today in which Michelle Obama talked, among other things, about how her husband’s message of hope contrasts with the way Americans are feeling now that Trump is in office.

“Now we’re feeling what not having hope feels like,” she said. “That it is necessary. It’s a necessary concept. Barack didn’t just talk about hope because he thought it was a nice story. He and I and many believe, what else do you have if you don’t have hope?”

It’s another sobering message from someone who spent much of the election delivering some of the most powerful warnings about the kind of person Trump is.
