New Girls Season 3 Trailer Is Meta
Hey liberal arts majors living in Brooklyn, your favorite show is coming back. That’s right, Girls.
This January, right when the government is scheduled for another debt ceiling standoff, HBO’s Girls will premiere and the four horsemen will rise and scorpion-tailed locusts will swarm Williamsburg.
Luckily, just this morning, the show’s creator and star, Lena Dunham, tweeted out a new trailer for the end of days new season.
There are girls working out, a girl spinning around in a Wu-Tang Clan T-shirt, a girl grinding against a tombstone, a girl crying at a cubicle, a girl crying at a table, and girls saying really mean things to one another.
Basically, Marnie’s not ok. Shoshanna’s not ok. Jessa doesn’t seem to be ok. Hannah looks ok, but then she looks like she’s crying at a cubicle, so she’s probably not ok.
So, that’s nice and realistic. Very realistic indeed. It’s just a nice look at what it’s like to be young and a not nice person in Brooklyn.
Look, it’s not that Girls is an awful show. It’s actually kind of nice to have a show on television that is smart about dealing with postfeminism and what it’s like to be young and try to figure out your life. That’s part of why we can’t stop watching. It’s just very easy to feel disconnected from the cast and characters for their relative privilege. Maybe Adam nailed it in the trailer when he said, “I don’t hate your friends, I’m just not interested in anything they have to say.” Thanks for that meta commentary, Lena.
Girls will be back with two back-to-back episodes on Jan. 12.
