New York Marathon reminds us all that we will never run as fast as some people

Sunday brought with it one of the world’s grandest traditions: the New York City Marathon, in which a hardcore group of runners competes for supremacy in a punishing race through America’s biggest city while a zillion people run for fun and a zillion other people stand around watching them and maybe muttering to themselves that they should get to the gym a little more often.

The runners journey throughout each of New York’s five boroughs, starting in Staten Island and winding their way through Brooklyn, into Queens, up Manhattan into the Bronx and then back down into Manhattan before finishing in Central Park. It is a lot, but every year a legion of hardy souls casts their doubts aside and dives headfirst into the maelstrom of the marathon.

In the end, Kenyans Mary Keitany and Stanley Biwott won the race. Huzzah!
