News Report About Crime Interrupted by Actual Crime
Just how bad is the crime in Rio de Janeiro? Apparently awful enough that a live news segment on the lack of police enforcement and the growing crime rate gets interrupted by, yep, you guessed it, an actual crime.
Reporter Eduardo Tchao was doing a “man on the street” focusing on the high crime rate in Rio de Janeiro’s Presidente Vargas neighborhood when he interviewed the would-be crime victim. In her interview, the woman notes that the area isn’t safe and that she probably shouldn’t be wearing her necklace because it would only encourage petty thieves. Sure enough, almost as if it were staged, a young mugger tries to yank it from her neck. He failed, but he also got away.
Our own Pedro Andrade, who’s from Rio, tells us that this specific story, which started off as a local news broadcast, has made national news in Brazil.
