Nikki Haley Reportedly Resigns as U.N. Ambassador
United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley will resign from her role in the Trump administration, according to multiple reports on Tuesday morning.
Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Trump and Haley would meet in the Oval Office at 10:30 AM ET.
Citing “two sources briefed on [Haley and Trump’s conversation] last week,” Axios reported that Haley—either one of the Administrations most complicit or ignorant enablers— had submitted her resignation to President Donald Trump last week during a White House visit. According to Axios, the timing of her resignation remains unclear, although news that she would be leaving “shocked a number of senior foreign policy officials in the Trump administration.”
News of Haley’s departure comes shortly after Trump’s cringe-worthy appearance at the the United Nations General Assembly last month. There, Trump gave a rambling speech during which he bragged about his administration’s accomplishments and was literally laughed at by assembled world leaders. Haley later insisted that the laughter was a sign of the “love” world leaders feel for Trump and how much they respect his honesty.
While the reasoning behind the former South Carolina governor’s abrupt departure remains unclear for now, it will almost certainly fuel speculation about her political future. Last year, Politico reported that the Democratic National Committee was doing “full-scale opposition research” on potential challengers to Trump in 2020, a list which included Haley.
Update, 10:59 AM ET: Haley will be resigning at the end of the year, according to Trump. Speaking with reporters in the Oval Office, Trump said that Haley would be resigning at the end of the year. He said that Haley had told him at least six months ago that she’d wanted “to take a break.” Haley also said she wouldn’t run for president in 2020, and said that she would instead campaign for Trump.
Update, 11:12 AM ET: Announcing the resignation, Trump lauded Haley as a “fantastic person” and “someone who gets it.”
