Paris police tear gas protesters as marches around the world demand climate change action

Hundreds of thousands of people around the world marched on Sunday to call for the world to take action against climate change.

The marches came a day before the globe’s top leaders are set to gather in Paris for a crucial UN summit on climate change. Protesters took to the streets in London and Berlin; in Australia and Africa and Asia, and in cities across the U.S. There were more than 2,000 events across the globe. Organizers estimated that at least 570,000 people participated.

In Paris itself, though, climate marchers had to face off against police who were enforcing a protest ban enacted by president Francois Hollande. Protesters placed tens of thousands of shoes on the Parisian streets to symbolize where their bodies would have been.

Others formed a human change tens of thousands of people long.

Of course, some people still wanted to march. In response, police used tear gas and pepper spray on them.

All in all, over 200 people were detained in Paris.
