President Obama tries to reassure America that we’re not all doomed

President Barack Obama offered a message of unification from the White House on Wednesday to a country badly divided by the traumatizing 2016 race and Donald Trump’s victory.

With Vice President Joe Biden at his side, Obama congratulated Trump, and said he would be meeting with him at the White House. He then addressed the country at large.

“We are all actually on one team. This is an intramural scrimmage,” he said.

He continued: “We’re Americans first; we’re patriots first. We all want what’s best for this country.”

While the president said democracy can be “noisy,” “contentious,” and “not always inspiring,” he urged young voters not to lose hope, a sentiment that Hillary Clinton echoed in her concession speech.

“To the young people: I just want you to know, you have to stay encouraged. Don’t get cynical. Don’t ever think you can’t make a difference,” he said.

Obama also got in one parting shot at the political pundit class, mentioning a video he shot before the race was called where he said the sun would rise no matter who was elected, which he called “one bit of prognosticating that actually came true.”
