Sorry, Donald Trump, but Mexico's president has some bad news about your wall
If there’s one thing you know about President-elect Donald Trump, it’s that he wants to build a wall (“not a fence—it’s a wall” he insisted during Thursday’s bizarre press conference) on the border between the United States and Mexico. For months, Trump has repeatedly stated that his administration will launch a staggeringly massive construction project aimed to seal off America’s Southern border from its neighbor. But don’t you worry, folks—Mexico’s gonna pay for the whole darn thing.
This week, however, Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto yet again threw some ice cold water on Trump’s hot xenophobic mess, insisting once and for all that, nope, Mexico has no intention to pay for anything of the sort.
“It is evident that we have some differences with the new government of the United States,” Peña Nieto reportedly told a gathering of Mexican diplomats on Wednesday. “Like the topic of the wall, that Mexico of course will not pay.” That’s what Peña Nieto reportedly told Trump in person during their infamous meeting last year, too.
Peña Nieto’s sentiment was echoed by former Mexican President—and, uh, “colorful” Trump antagonist—Vicente Fox, who tweeted a similar message on Wednesday.
In fact, recent reports indicate that Trump will turn to the United States Congress, and not Mexico, to front the money on his proposed construction project—a plan that the President-elect insists is simply a prelude to reimbursement by the Mexican government.
“We’re going to build a wall,” Trump proclaimed during his Wednesday press conference. “I could wait about a year-and-a-half until we finish our negotiations with Mexico, which we’ll start immediately after we get to office, but I don’t want to wait.”
In other words, he’s asking American tax payers to front him some cash because he’s just too impatient to hammer out a deal—one which Mexico seems pretty adamantly against.
What could possibly go wrong?
