Surprise! Kim Davis is now officially a member of the Republican Party

A county clerk who’s a Democrat in Kentucky is jailed for refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. She’s embraced by the Republican party. What happens next will amaze you!

That’s right, Reuters has the news that Kim Davis is now a Republican.

The Rowan County Clerk, who was jailed for several days earlier this month after being held in contempt of court, told Reuters that she and her husband “talked about it for quite a while and we came to the conclusion that the Democratic Party left us a long time ago, so why were we hanging on?”

Davis was embraced by the Republican Party before her switch. GOP presidential hopefuls Mike Huckabee and Ted Cruz have offered their full-throated support for her, both appearing at a rally when Davis was released from jail. Huckabee even went as far as to say he would go to jail in her place (not possible, Mike), and earlier stated that her being in jail “removes all doubt of the criminalization of Christianity in our country.

There’s been a fair bit of focus on Davis’s Democratic party membership,  but as professor Ferrel Guillory told the Washington Post, “yes, she’s a Democrat but not in the way that all these folks mean. It’s just something for folks to focus on.” Basically, she’s a remnant of a Democratic party of the past.

And now it’s something we can stop focusing on.
