The Week in WTF: A Hangover Cure, Calorie Magic, and More

Here’s another roundup of weird news from across the globe. This week we’ve got a party in a pill, a magic calorie wand, and more:

Party and feel no pain!

Digest this: There’s a guy who’s actually named Professor Nutt, and he’s got a magic pill to make your long, lost nights painless the next day. He’s developed an “alcohol substitute” that’s supposed to mimic the effect of alcohol without the health risks. And here’s the best part: the effects caused by the drug are followed by an “antidote,” chaser leaving the user free to drive, return to work, or just not crave disgusting, greasy food in the morning.

Fever? There’s iPhone for that.

Your iPhone is your lifeline, we know. So why bother with something as pesky as, oh, a thermometer? If you’re feeling feverish, there’s an app for that. The Kinsa Smart Thermometer has you covered. One end of the thermometer goes under your tongue and the other goes into your iPhone. Now all you need is some chicken noodle soup with a soda on the side.

Here’s some calorie magic! (Uh, kind of.)

Calories — you wish you could unlearn about them, right? Or maybe you have a close relationship with counting them. Either way, here’s another magic app that will bring you closer. TellSpec is a spectrometer scanner that works with an app for your phone. Wave it over food, and the app can tell you the allergens, chemicals, nutrients, calories and ingredients of what you are about to consume. What you do with that information afterwards is, of course, up to you.
