This WNBA player joined the growing chorus of Colin Kaepernick supporters with a powerful statement
Colin Kaepernick may be the person catching the most attention for his stance against racial injustice, but as far as professional sports leagues go, it’s the WNBA leading the way.
Back in July, before the first NFL preseason game had been played, four Minnesota Lynx players wore shirts calling for greater police accountability in the wake of the deaths of Alton Sterling and Philando Castle. And last week, the Indiana Fever became the first team to kneel together for the national anthem, echoing Kaepernick’s original gesture.
Over the weekend, New York Liberty guard Brittany Boyd carried on the league’s tradition of protest by arriving at New York’s Madison Square Garden wearing a Kaepernick jersey before her playoff game Saturday night against the Phoenix Mercury.
“Being in solidarity with him, everything,” Boyd said, when asked her rationale for wearing the jersey by The New York Times. “The message that he’s delivering, I’m 100 percent behind him, and I agree with everything that he’s trying to change in the world. For me, it was just showing what I represent and the respect I have for him and what he’s doing. As an African-American male in America today, what he’s doing is hard to do.”
Later, Boyd sat and prayed during the national anthem. Meanwhile, the Liberty and the Phoenix Mercury locked arms, the Times reported.
“I don’t want to stand up. I choose not to stand up and I sit down and pray,” Boyd told The Associated Press. “Colin and his message about social injustice going on in this country today is something I believe needs change.”
Meanwhile, Kaepernick continues to protest the anthem, kneeling before the Niners’ loss to the Seahawks on Sunday. He even showed up to an Oakland high school football game on Friday and joined them in their own demonstration.
