Three Amigos Summit gets as many laughs on social media as the original movie

This week’s Three Amigos’ Summit was a moderate success that produced tangible results, including Canada’s announcement that it’s going to lift visa restrictions for Mexicans by Dec. 1.

But perhaps some of the greatest achievements inspired by this week’s North American Leaders’ Summit happened on Mexican and Canadian social media, where awkward photo ops were turned into brilliant memes and gifs.

It all started when Twitter highlighted “news” of Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau going for a morning jog in Ottawa in what many hoped was the birth of a new cross-cultural, long distance bromance.

“Trudeau’s legs.”

“Stay with whoever looks at you the same way Enrique Peña Nieto looks at the Prime Minister of Canada.”

Mexican satirical website ElDeforma took the joke a step further by implying that the embattled governor of Chiapas — considered by many to be Peña Nieto’s “mini-me” — became jealous of all the images of Trudeau and Peña Nieto hitting it off.

But the real awkwardness came when Trudeau tried to simultaneously shake hands with Peña Nieto and Obama. The threeway flub immediately went down in social media history:

Peña Nieto was also mocked for allegedly losing his newly-found bromance with Trudeau to President Obama. As the two talked, Peña Nieto seemed left out — more like a third wheel than the third amigo.
