Trump Goes After Jeff Sessions Over Indicted GOP Congressmen

Now that it’s a holiday, Donald Trump is releasing all of his pent-up anxiety over having to take a back seat to John McCain tributes all week.

He also doesn’t seem to be content in obstructing justice only in the investigation of his own campaign, as he his now interfering with the criminal cases of two Republican congressmen who were indicted last month. And he’s doing it by throwing his own attorney general under the bus—again.

After attacking AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka on Labor Day, Trump turned his sights on Attorney General Jeff Sessions over the indictments of New York GOP Congressman Chris Collins and California Rep. Duncan Hunter.

Collins and his son were arrested and charged with insider trading in early August, while Hunter and his wife were indicted later the same month for wildly misusing campaign funds. Collins and Hunter were the first two members of Congress, respectively, to endorse then-candidate Trump for president.

The 18-month federal investigation of Hunter was prompted by reports in the San Diego Union-Tribune. Collins had been under investigation for well over a year.

Here’s Trump appearing to obstruct justice in the two criminal cases against members of his own party via Twitter on Monday:

“Two long running, Obama era, investigations of two very popular Republican Congressmen were brought to a well publicized charge, just ahead of the Mid-Terms, by the Jeff Sessions Justice Department. Two easy wins now in doubt because there is not enough time. Good job Jeff……,” Trump tweeted.

“….The Democrats, none of whom voted for Jeff Sessions, must love him now. Same thing with Lyin’ James Comey. The Dems all hated him, wanted him out, thought he was disgusting – UNTIL I FIRED HIM! Immediately he became a wonderful man, a saint like figure in fact. Really sick!”

Last week, Politico reported that Trump had embarked on a “furious lobbying campaign” to turn Republican senators against Sessions. For weeks, Trump has been “venting his anger at Sessions to ‘any senator who will listen,’” a GOP Senate aide told the news site.

Apparently, the recent willingness of senators like Chuck Grassley and Lindsey Graham to join Trump on the dark side of the Sessions issue has to do with the attorney general’s opposition to a criminal justice reform bill that both senators support. According to Politico, Trump discussed firing Sessions with Graham during a recent phone conversation, and Graham reportedly urged the president to wait until after midterm elections in November.

The report added:

“There’s the belief that if the president taking action with respect to Sessions is going to be an important part of the [Special Counsel Robert] Mueller obstruction case, most of that case has already been made. Things that the president has already done privately that have been reported, but also things that the president has done publicly that could be characterized as bullying or intimidating, all of that case is already there ready to be made, such that firing him is almost like an afterthought,” said one person familiar with the conversations among members of the president’s legal team.

In other words, Trump doesn’t give a shit if he’s obstructing the criminal cases of elected officials from the Republican Party ahead of key midterm elections. Rather, he’s pissed that the country’s top justice official won’t bend to the president’s own political agenda. MAGA!
