U Okay, Mahmoud?

Controversial former President of Iran and current Extremely Online Guy Mahmoud Ahmadinejad made a little tweet commemorating the 17th anniversary of 9/11 on Tuesday. Ahmadinejad didn’t seem nearly as excited to celebrate this special holiday as our own Extremely Online president, and he offered up a message of compassion on America’s day of mourning. He also, apparently, wants… some answers?

Ahmadinejad—who was a professor in September 2001—has long counted himself among the likes of Alex Jones, Charlie Sheen, and Macklemore in demanding to know What Really Happened on 9/11. According to Reuters, in 2010 he told the U.N. General Assembly that he believed the U.S. government “orchestrated the attack to reverse the declining American economy, and its grips on the Middle East, in order to save the Zionist regime.”

The Obama administration criticized Ahmadinejad for his comments and I assume they were widely publicized at the time. But that was seven 9/11s ago, and now that Ahmadinejad has access to Twitter, land of conspiracy theories and bad takes, he cements his true place among the Truthers. Like this guy:

Beautiful.

Ahmadinejad joined Twitter in 2017. He has thus far made 109 tweets about the “liberal capitalist system,” “the Zionist regime,” and sports. Note that Twitter has been banned in Iran since 2009.
