Utah minor league baseball team cancels "Caucasian Heritage Night"

It was going to be an exciting day when the Orem Owlz—a Los Angeles Angels minor league affiliate—take on the Missoula Osprey in Orem’s beautiful Brent Brown Stadium on August 10. Minor league baseball’s known for all kinds of shenanigans—crazy food choices, cheap tickets, wacky promotions. And, boy, did the Owlz have quite the wacky promotion cooked up for the 10th! Who’s ready for… Caucasian Heritage Night?! Via the Owlz’ website:

Irish, Italian, Scandinavian, German…. or even Utahn! Whatever your background, celebrate it at the Home of the Owlz!

Shockingly, the Owlz have chosen to cancel the event, according to a press release posted on their website:

Our goal in this promotion, like any of our promotions, is to have fun and make fun of everyday normalcies. Our night was to include wonder bread on burgers with mayonnaise, clips from shows like Friends and Seinfeld and trying to solve the vertical leaping challenge. We understand, in light of recent tragic events, that our intentions have been misconstrued. For that, we sincerely apologize.

OK then!
