Watch this compilation of hacking scenes from movies of the '70s, '80s, and '90s

Hacking in movies is confounding. Loads of *tap tap tap tap tap* “Damn” *tap tap tap tap tap tap* “Okay, we’re in.”

Into what? How did mashing the keyboard do that? It’s a mystery.

But it’s also pretty fun(ny) to watch. And now a benevolent video editor has blessed us with a compilation of some of the finest hacking and computer scenes from the past few decades: “copy complete:”

“copy complete” features scenes of people using computers from 78 different movies across three decades, ranging from A Man, A Woman, and a Bank to Pretty in Pink, to, of course, Hackers. It was created by editor Maria Auerbach. While they’re not all scenes of hacking, there are plenty of those. There are also lots of floppy disks:

Seriously, though, watch the whole video. These sorts of compilations have become a genre unto themselves at this point, but it’s fascinating to see what tropes about computer use and hacking remained constant over the end of the last century.
