What It's Like to Be Undocumented and Expecting in Trump's America
Ruth Guzman is expecting her fourth child, a girl. Cristina Tzintzún is expecting her first, a boy. Both women live in Austin, Texas, both are excited about their pregnancies, and both are fearful that their families will be torn apart by the Trump administration’s escalation of raids, detentions, and deportations.
Guzman is undocumented. Tzintzun’s husband, Manuel, is undocumented.
In An Uncertain Future, directors Chelsea Hernandez and Iliana Sosa follow Guzman and Tzintzún from Trump’s election through his inauguration. As the mothers prepare for the births of their babies, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, also known as ICE, conducts raids in Austin, creating unease and anxiety among families. Knowing their babies may be considered “anchor babies” and face segregation and racism once born, the story presents the real fears mothers have for their children in Trump’s America.
