What the hell does Kendrick Lamar's new album art mean?

Every few days, Kendrick Lamar shares a tidbit of information about his impending sophomore album. Five days ago he shared an iTunes link where a full track list for the new opus was hidden:

The album is literally called [Untitled] but we suspect it’s more “name TBD.”

Last night, when the clock struck midnight, he posted this photo of his new album art to Instagram:

“Don’t all dogs go to heaven? Don’t Gangsta’s boogie? Do owl shit stank? Lions, Tigers & Bears. But TO PIMP A BUTTERFLY. Its the American dream nigga….” – lil Homie.

What does it all mean?!

As a whole, the image is powerful, though confusing. There are black men and black boys, and potentially a black baby (the jury’s out on the kid featured in the very middle of the image) drinking champagne and holding fistfuls of cash. Middle fingers fly as they crouch over an unconscious older Caucasian judge — all of this on the White House lawn.

Is that judge male or female? Is this a statement about the justice system? Is Kendrick’s posse planning on taking over the government? It’s unclear.

The caption complicates this further:

“Don’t all dogs go to heaven? Don’t Gangsta’s boogie? Do owl shit stank? Lions, Tigers & Bears. But TO PIMP A BUTTERFLY. Its the American dream nigga….” – lil Homie.

Are these men pimping butterflies? Is butterfly the new word we’re using to describe prostitutes? Are they moving into the White House? What on earth does owl shit have to do with any of it?

Pleading that Kendrick releases all of the lyrics for this album next so we can obsess over find answers to these burning questions.
