While torture goes unpunished: Our criminally absurd justice system

The new report on CIA torture shows us how low our government intelligence complex was willing to stoop for the pretense of security, where a variety of cruel and unusual practices were conceived of and carried out with seeming reckless abandon. In the country with the world’s highest incarceration rate, how do we reconcile the lack of consequences for indefensible torture with the startling number of Americans currently behind bars for nonviolent crimes?
