White Evangelicals Are the Most Rabidly Anti-Refugee Group in America

A new study has found that there is no group more opposed to admitting refugees into the United States than white evangelicals.

The Pew Research Center interviewed white, black, and Latinx men and women of different ages, religions, and education levels. In the end, Pew found that 68 percent of white evangelical Protestants said the U.S. “does not have a responsibility to accept refugees.”

Sixty-five percent of religiously unaffiliated survey respondents, meanwhile, said the U.S. does have a responsibility to accept refugees.

Sixty-seven percent of black respondents said the U.S. has a responsibility to accept refugees, followed by 59 percent of Latinx and 46 percent of white survey respondents overall.

Pew noted that“the survey comes as the nation is likely to admit its smallest number of refugees in decades,” partly due to refugee admission caps the Trump administration announced last year.

White evangelical Protestants continue to approve of President Donald Trump at almost twice the rate of the general public, according to a study released last month by the Public Religion Research Institute. A 2014 Pew study found 76 percent of evangelical Protestants are white.

“I think evangelicals have found their dream president,” Jerry Falwell Jr., president of Liberty University, told the Washington Post after President Trump signed an executive order “prioritizing religious freedom.”

Evangelicals seem also not to mind President Trump getting caught on tape bragging about grabbing women “by the pussy” or that he’s been accused of cheating on his wife with Stormy Daniels.

“We kind of gave him—‘All right, you get a mulligan. You get a do-over here,’” Tony Perkins, head of the evangelical activist group Family Research Council, told Politico.
