White House: Donald Trump's comments disqualify him from Presidency

I t’s unclear if the White House thinks Donald Trump is “funny” anymore (the media certainly doesn’t), but it definitely doesn’t think that he’s fit to be president.

During a recent press briefing, White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest made of point of not mincing words when asked about Trump’s assertion that all Muslim people should be barred from entering the U.S.

“What Donald Trump said yesterday disqualifies him from serving as president,” Earnest said flatly. “The question now is about the rest of the Republican Party and whether or not they’re going to be dragged into the dust-bin of history with him.”

Earnest’s comments come on the heels of a number of the GOP’s other frontrunners cautiously demurring from Trump’s position while refusing to flat-out denounce his racist demagoguery and Islamophobia for what they really are.

House Speaker Paul Ryan insisted that religious freedom was a “fundamental Constitutional principle” while also insisting that it wasn’t his place to chime in on the election. Jeb Bush, whose domain name Trump has seemingly managed to get ahold of, called Trump’s statements “unhinged,” but also insisted that his opponent wasn’t really all that serious.

From Earnest’s perspective, though, these relatively gentle admonitions aren’t enough.

“If they are so cowed by Mr. Trump and his supporters that they are not willing to stand by the values enshrined in the Constitution,” Earnest said. “Then they have no business serving as President of the United States themselves.”
