Woman wants to give birth in the ocean with the help of some dolphins

Dorina Rosin is a spiritual healer in Hawaii, and she’s also a pregnant woman. There are many pregnant women on this crazy Earth of ours, but she may perhaps be the only one with plans of giving birth to her child with the help of a dolphin. Wow, that doesn’t sound like a good idea! What do the experts say?

“This has to be, hands down, one of the worst natural birthing ideas anyone has ever had,” science journalist Christie Wilcox wrote in Discover in 2013.

That sounds about right. What does this look like? CBS Atlanta reports Rosin “took part in a  38-week blessing which she swims in the water alongside dolphins.” That’s nice.

There’s not much more information about what else this means, other than that she plans on giving birth in the ocean, and I guess ideally some dolphins show up? Good for her, but there’s something buried in the CBS Atlanta report that it’s important to spend a little bit of time with:

The couple run a healing retreat and view nature as a healing power. The pair says they believe their baby will be able to speak “dolphin.”

Alright, alright, so: by swimming with dolphins for 38 weeks, and then ostensibly birthing this baby in the ocean near some dolphins, these parents believe their baby… will be able… to speak dolphin. Let’s set aside the scientific implications of this claim, because that is a set of questions that distracts from a much more interesting set of questions. Instead, let’s spend some time thinking about what the benefits of speaking dolphin might be.

Yep.
